“Rescuing Cats and Rediscovering Purpose”
From Glamour to Grit: The Founder of Paw Saviour on Rescuing Cats and Rediscovering Purpose
It started with one cat—and a choice that changed everything. Tanya Singh didn’t set out to start a cat rescue foundation, but life nudged her toward a path she hadn’t imagined. What began as a spontaneous act of compassion gradually evolved into Paw Saviour Foundation, a full-scale rescue center that now cares for over 200 rescued cats.
In what many would call the midpoint of life, Tanya left behind a thriving career in fashion, media, and fitness to follow a calling that gave her renewed purpose and direction. In this heartfelt interview, she shares the journey of building a rescue center from scratch, the emotional weight of rescue work, and the deep sense of fulfillment that comes from finding your true path—often when you least expect it.

What inspired you to start Paw Saviour Foundation, and how did your journey into animal welfare begin?
It all began in 2007 when a cat started visiting our balcony. We began feeding her casually. Eventually, she stayed, and we found out she was pregnant. After she gave birth, we couldn’t bring ourselves to give the kittens away—especially not to an NGO that demanded money and wouldn’t provide updates. That moment marked a turning point. We started feeding more strays, carried cat food everywhere, and that’s how our journey into cat welfare truly began.
Even before we officially registered the foundation in 2020, we had been actively involved in feeding and caring for cats for over 14 years. Those early acts of kindness laid the groundwork for what would become a full-time rescue center.
Why did you choose to focus primarily on cats, and how has that shaped the mission of the foundation?
During the 2020 lockdown, we noticed that many dog feeders were active, but cats were largely ignored. They were hiding, scavenging through garbage, and clearly starving. That’s when we decided to narrow our focus to cat welfare—a part of animal welfare that was being completely overlooked.
That said, we never turn away animals in distress—whether it’s a dog, monkey, or bird. We help them get treated or connect them with the right networks. But our rescue center and resources are fully dedicated to cats, who rarely have advocates of their own.
Can you share a rescue story that holds a special place in your heart?
One of our most emotional rescues was Millie. A pedestrian posted her photo online, lying nearly dead in Okhla. No one was willing to help. I rushed there, found her under some industrial woods, and brought her home despite the vet saying she wouldn’t survive. With warmth and care, her temperature slowly rose. Within days, she began eating, walking, and showing signs of life. Today, she’s a beautiful, fluffy cat who’s still with us. That rescue was the first under the official name of Paw Saviour, and we’ll never forget it. Her story is now a reminder of the transformative work that happens every day at our rescue center.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while getting the foundation off the ground?
Two major challenges still persist—lack of funds and lack of committed staff. Most people see animal care as just another job, not a passion. Staff retention is a constant issue, and even when we find someone, they leave within days. Running a shelter with over 200 cats involves daily cleaning, feeding, medical care, and hospital visits.
In the early days, the number of rescues grew so quickly that within three months, we had over 30 cats in our house—including 12 paralyzed ones. That’s when we knew we couldn’t continue from home and needed a dedicated rescue center.
Transitioning from a home setup to a structured rescue center was both a logistical and emotional leap.
How do you manage daily operations like rescue coordination, medical care, and adoptions?
Rescue calls often disrupt our schedule, as each one takes 3–4 hours. We handle medical care ourselves to save costs—administering injections, dressing wounds, and managing treatment. We don’t foster externally; all rescues stay with us in the shelter.
Adoptions are rare and take time. We thoroughly check the background and safety of the new home. It can take two to three months to place even one cat. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to manage it all, but we try. Our rescue center is often stretched thin, but it remains a lifeline for cats with nowhere else to go.
What are some misconceptions people have about cats, and how does the foundation work to change those views?
There’s a deep-rooted belief that cats bring bad luck, shouldn’t cross your path, or cry on stairs. People also wrongly believe cats cry loudly or can spread rabies—none of which is true. Cats don’t attack unless provoked and are actually very cautious around humans.
We try to correct these myths through awareness and sharing real experiences—showing people that cats are intelligent, affectionate beings who choose their humans. Educational outreach is a growing part of our work at the rescue center, especially when we take in cats who’ve clearly been abused due to superstition.
What role does community support play in your work, and how can people contribute meaningfully?
We have a strong base of about 50 loyal supporters who donate monthly and motivate us to keep going. Their trust is the reason we’ve grown from a home-run initiative to a 16,000-square-foot rescue center.
Their support has helped us dream bigger—like setting up a charitable hospital for street cats where treatment would be entirely free. We want to continue expanding, but we need more hands, more hearts, and more awareness. Every new supporter brings renewed hope to our growing rescue center.
How has this journey changed you personally or influenced your perspective on life?
My life has completely transformed. I once worked in the glamour industry—television, theatre, advertising, and fitness. From parties and fashion to backaches and cleaning litter—it’s been a radical shift.
Within four years, I haven’t had a single day off. There are days when my back aches from lifting or I feel completely exhausted. But the lives we save give me strength. I no longer think about holidays or myself—my day begins and ends with thinking about the cats and how to give them better lives. This shift from spotlight to service now fuels every moment I spend at our rescue center.
Have there been any partnerships or key supporters who’ve made a significant impact on your mission?
Yes, we’ve been blessed with long-time donors who continue to support us without fail. Their monthly contributions help us survive and grow. They’ve been with us from the time we operated out of our home and continue to stand by us as we try to expand our rescue center. Their belief in our mission has helped turn our rescue center into a sanctuary for the abandoned cats.
What’s on the horizon for Paw Saviour Foundation—any new goals or dreams you’re excited about?
Our biggest dream is to own land and build a permanent shelter so our cats have a home, even if something happens to us. We want them to have a roof of their own and a secure future.
We also plan to open a fully charitable hospital for street cats across Delhi NCR—where treatment is completely free. Many people who notice an injured cat don’t act simply because they can’t afford the medical bills. We want to remove that barrier and give every street cat a fighting chance. This hospital will work hand-in-hand with our rescue center to ensure no cat suffers alone.
